Why we want it

A lush, low groundcover for deep shade with glossy heart-shaped leaves. The native evergreen gingers (Hexastylis) hold their leaves all winter.

Where it goes in our yard

Deep-shade carpets and path edges where grass won't grow.

Planting & care

Wants rich, moist, humusy shade. Slow to start, then a beautiful dense mat.

What to buy

Evergreen Hexastylis (e.g. H. arifolia, shuttleworthii) for winter presence.

Sourcing

Native-plant nurseries.
