Why we want it

Your stated love and your unfair advantage. Moss is the unifying carpet that ties the whole forest garden together โ€” and your shade, moisture, and acidity make this the single best site for it.

Where it goes in our yard

Everywhere it wants to be: lawn glades, between stepping stones, over boulders, and at every bed transition.

Planting & care

Wants acidic soil (pH 5โ€“5.5), shade, and steady moisture. Press transplanted sheets firmly for soil contact; keep damp for the first 3 weeks. Full coverage takes 12โ€“18 months. Don't fertilize or lime.

What to buy

Cushion/mound moss for boulders and slow spots; sheet/fern moss for flat carpets.

Sourcing

Transplant and divide from your own property first (free), then Moss Acres or Mountain Moss for volume.
