Why we want it

The quintessential Southern understory tree and a four-season performer. Iconic, and it belongs in this woodland.

Where it goes in our yard

Woodland edges and gaps in the mid-canopy where it gets filtered light.

Planting & care

Acidic soil, mulch, avoid mower/trimmer damage to the trunk. Give it some air movement โ€” dogwood anthracnose worsens in dead-still deep wet shade.

What to buy

Straight species, or disease-resistant types; pink forms ('Cherokee Brave') for variety.

Sourcing

Native-plant nurseries and most garden centers.
