Acidic soil, mulch, avoid mower/trimmer damage to the trunk. Give it some air movement — dogwood anthracnose worsens in dead-still deep wet shade.
Straight species, or disease-resistant types; pink forms ('Cherokee Brave') for variety.
Native-plant nurseries and most garden centers.
